One unit on each NFC team that needs work

With the start of training camp set to start in less than two months, I asked the following question this week:

What do you see as the best-case scenario for this team as composed for the upcoming season? Will this be a year of progression, regression, or will they remain where they were last season (aka not nearly good enough given the money spent)?

Below are some of your thoughts and answers-

burstingfire believes that it can go all wrong, or it will be okay if Tua can manage to stay healthy.

Best case scenario IMO is Tua stays healthy and has a monster year. The team wins 10-11 games and wins a playoff game.

Most likely scenario, Tua gets hurt/concussed and misses more games. Back up QB isn’t good enough. Other injuries pile up. The OL still isn’t good. The DEF has more injuries to key starters. But the team finds wins against mediocre or bad teams and finishes with 6-8 wins. This would be worse case IMO.

I also acknowledge that there is a chance that this season goes horribly wrong and we finish with a top 5 pick. I don’t think it’s likely, but I wouldn’t be totally shocked if it happens. I would rather see the team implode than have another middle of the pack season.

If Tua can’t stay healthy and have a monster season, it’s time to draft his replacement.

Jptapt says there’s a chance that they can get back to the playoffs if they get some lucky breaks.

Best case? They do okay and catch a couple of lucky breaks, and end up in the playoffs. And low and behold, win their first playoff game before exiting.

Probable case? Another mediocre season, but just wait until next year!

Just my humble opinion…

SlayerNation1 says you first have to consider the worst-case scenario.

We must first address the worst case scenario: another middling, 8-10 win season, no playoff win, with the usual injury excuses. This will preserve McGrier and just delay the inevitable for yet another year as We languish.

Best case scenario with the cards We’re dealt:

A sluggish start, four game losing streak culminating in Spain, Weaver gets the battlefield promotion for the Bye. Weaver will be a Head Coach somewhere in 2026, because He does more with less. It is imperative that Ross gets a look at his HC style with enough sample size.

sdphinsfan would like to see what Weaver could do with the talent we currently have on the roster.

I like alot of the talent on this roster. It’s young, there will ups and downs, but I think they’ll be a fun team to watch and if they stay relatively healthy, it’ll be a team that gets much better toward the end of the year. My fear though is that we’re hamstrung at the HC position. If we succeed this season, he stays…and long term, that’s not good. But I don’t want to see my team fail either, which is the only way he leaves. I’d really like to see this roster under Weaver’s leadership. I’d be stoked for that.

Yarganaught wanted a top CB at pick 13. Yeah, me too!!!

If this team can start off fast and is 7-1, it will be very interesting to see if they can handle the adversity over the next few games, or fold under pressure of facing some good teams or an unfavorable stretch of times/locations.

Personally, I have high hopes for this team this season… and I hope I was very wrong about wanting them to select a CB @#13 instead of a DT.

Tua2HillWaddle wishes they knew!

I sure wish I knew the answer to your question. I enter each season with one thing – hope. So far, that hope has hit some highs and lows since Mcdonalds has taken over. But, to answer your question, call me a homer, but I have a feeling they surprise us this year with a playoff bid, and a win! But, get knocked out in the Divisional round.

Spok507 believes they might be better than last year’s sad 8 and 9.

I can see the secondary struggling at first, but the first 8 games are winnable (outside of Buffalo in Buffalo), so the schedule should help and give them time to gel and figure out how to work as a unit. The DLine and LBs are going to be good, so that will help as well. The offense should be better and, with a better run blocking OLine, they should be more balanced so defenses can’t haul off against the passing game as easily. Again, the softer first half of the schedule should help give them time to get into a better groove. So, despite losing some of the marquis players, I do think they’ll play better as a team. So I can see them doing better than the 8-9 they gave us last season. I always go into a season with hope (tho I firmly believe we won’t get to a SB until we move on from Tua) so I’m in that hopeful stage now.

toscana jones has a solid list that I hope comes true.

To me, the best cfase scenario would be to make the playoffs and win at least one game.

Anything more than that is obviously unfathomable and would require that all of these factors come to fruition:

1- Ramsey get traded for a 5th round pick;

2- with the freed up cap space Jonnu Smith and Zach Seiler are awarded a contract that keeps them happy;

3- team signs a veteran CB: Douglas, Samuel (my favorite), Gilmore, or someone else;

4- during training camp one of the young CB emerges as a bona-fide stater, think of Smith, Bonner, Duck, Marshall.

So much for the off-season, during the season then:

1- Tua misses a max of 2 games;

2- his backup wins at least one of the two;

3- not too many injuries all around;

4- all key players injury free;

5- OL gels sufficiently;

6- D secondary gels sufficiently.

Now, that’s a lot to ask but, hey, here you have it.

PhinsTifosi is feeling way over optimistic.

20-0

phinsatx sees the team as a possible sleeper team.

I said this in another thread, but this team definitely has a weird sleeper vibe this year. I think it is all the young hungry players that could surprise. As far as best case and worst case, I guess best case is guys that nobody has ever heard of around the NFL are getting pro bowl nods, all the rookies hit and we are causing damage in the payoffs or even Super Bowl. Worst case, I think we saw some of that last year. Everything goes wrong and everybody sucks. I’m not sure what will really happen, but I am encouraged by McDaniel’s presser today. Basically, he admitted that you need to run the ball well to get defenders to creep up for big pass plays. Not exactly a revelation, but it does put into perspective a lot of the emphasis on physical players that can run block this offseason.

That’s our random ten comments for this evening. There is actually more optimism than I expected, which is good. I, for one, always hope but am very concerned about the secondary at this point, even though the pass rush should be really solid. As always, thank you to each of you who visits the post each evening or the next morning and answers our question of the day.
