Yankees making right decision with manager Aaron Boone

Yankees To Activate DJ LeMahieu On Tuesday

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone is heading into the last year of his contract. That may not be the case for much longer.

Meredith Marakovitz of YES Network reported that team owner Hal Steinbrenner wants to begin extension talks with Boone. He said the Yankees “will be talking with him in the days and weeks to come” about continuing his tenure in New York.

By most standards, Boone has had a successful run with the Yankees. A first-time manager who took over ahead of the 2018 season, Boone has posted a 603-429 record in his seven seasons, leading New York to the postseason six times. The Yankees reached the World Series in 2024, capturing their first AL pennant since 2009.

That is not enough for a fan base accustomed to winning. Boone has been under fire from the fans, particularly in light of New York’s mistakes during the World Series. Nevertheless, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told Randy Miller of NJ.com that he is “a fan” of Boone.

The problem with moving on from Boone is finding a replacement. We ranked Cashman as the eighth-best manager in the majors heading into 2024. Short of any of the managers ahead of him becoming available and, in some cases, not being interested in retirement, Boone is the best option.

Boone also continues the stability that the Yankees have enjoyed on the bench. Only two other managers — Hall of Famer Joe Torre and 2009 World Series-winning skipper Joe Girardi — have been at the helm since the start of the 1996 season.

Boone may not be the best manager in the game, but he is a known quantity, and the Yankees could easily do a lot worse.
