St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Willson Contreras lost his cool after his team’s loss to the Chicago Cubs on Thursday, and he has since expressed regret over his actions.
The Cardinals were trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the ninth inning at Busch Stadium in St. Louis when outfielder Alec Burleson led off with a double. Cubs reliever Daniel Palencia then hit Contreras with a pitch to bring the tying run to the plate with no outs.
Palencia struck out the next three batters to get out of the jam. The right-hander was understandably excited and shouted something in the direction of Contreras, who took exception. Contreras then began jawing at Palencia, which resulted in the benches clearing.
