Wild trade proposal sends Seahawks QB Geno Smith to New York Giants

Could the New York Giants explore a reunion with quarterback Geno Smith this offseason?

The Bleacher Report scouting department believes they can lure Smith away from the Seattle Seahawks this offseason with a reasonable offer rather than lay a huge burden on a rookie to be their 2025 starter.

Hypothetical Trade We’d Love to See: OL Jermaine Eluemunor, 2025 first-round pick (No. 3 overall), 2025 fifth-round pick (No. 155 overall) for QB Geno Smith, 2025 first-round pick (No. 18 overall), 2025 third-round pick (No. 82 overall)

It really doesn’t feel like the Giants’ current regime really has the leeway to wait for a rookie quarterback to develop. Even if they can guarantee that either Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders will be available at No. 3, they aren’t quite the same caliber as Drake Maye and Caleb Williams from a year ago.

Brian Daboll has yet to have a good quarterback since taking the Giants’ job. It’s time that he gets a chance to prove himself with a quarterback who can win right now. Geno Smith might just be the best quarterback who could be available via trade.

This deal would give the Seahawks an opportunity to draft one of the top talents in the draft while putting Geno Smith’s contract on the Giants books. It would also still leave the Giants with two draft picks to improve the overall roster.

Smith is in the final year of the three-year, $75 million deal which will pay him $14.8 million for this upcoming season. He will turn 35 in October but still has plenty of football left in him. But is it quality football and enough to fend off the hungry/frustrated Giants fan base? That’s the question.

The deal solves the quarterback position for at least a year. The Giants could look to extend Smith if he leads them to a dramatic turnaround and they are still not settled on the future at the position (if they trade the third overall pick in this deal, they may not be).

And that could all hypothetically happen. Smith had career highs in completion percentage (70.4) and passing yards (4,320) last season. He threw for 21 touchdowns but also tossed 15 picks. Smith was named to the Pro Bowl in 2022 and 2023.

The loss of Eluemunor would hurt, especially if Evan Neal continues to struggle at right tackle. The draft picks are negligible but the Giants would still get a shot at a decent player with the 18th overall pick.

Bringing Smith back would be met with some resistance, however. Keep in mind, New York fans have not forgotten his bust-out with the Jets as a high draft pick and being the player who interrupted Eli Manning’s consecutive starting streak.
