What’s your favorite non-Seattle Seahawks sports moment as a fan?

Welcome to Casual Friday, the open thread where we veer away from Seattle Seahawks talk and get into some off-topic community discussions.

Today’s theme is about sports but it’s not about the Seahawks. I’m fairly confident that most of our comments section watches at least one other sport, although we do have some who have only ever followed the ‘Hawks and no one else. Nevertheless, I’m interested to know your all-time favorite non-Seahawks sports moments. Pro, college, or high school, championship game, playoff game, or regular season, it doesn’t matter to me. You just need to have witnessed your top moment live either on television or in attendance.

In Seattle pro sports history, we’ve seen the Storm win four WNBA titles, the Sounders win a couple of MLS Cups and capture the CONCACAF Champions League in 2022 (which is a remarkable achievement given Liga MX clubs continue to dominate the competition), and the Sea Wolves win two Major League Rugby championships. The SuperSonics were champions in 1979 and reached the Finals in 1978 and 1996, with many other memorable wins and playoff triumphs (and some embarrassments) along the way. The Kraken are the new kids on the block and their high point was knocking the reigning Stanley Cup champion Colorado Avalanche out in the first round of their lone playoff appearance. Lastly, while the Mariners have never even been to a World Series, they did give us ‘The Double’ in 1995 and the 2022 playoff-clinching walk-off home run by the Big Dumper himself will forever be in franchise lore.

This doesn’t have to be limited to team sports, either. If you’re a massive Carlos Alcaraz fan in tennis and you just watched his thriller over Jannik Sinner at the French Open, stanning for Alcaraz is a totally acceptable answer. I don’t think any individual track race has captivated me more than Usain Bolt’s 200m world record back in 2009.

But my personal favorite moment as a fan? It’s somewhat Seahawks adjacent given the shared ownership, but Damian Lillard sending the Zombie Sonics out of the playoffs and the Portland Trail Blazers to the 2019 Western Conference Semifinals was a feeling of excitement I’ve historically reserved for the Seahawks.

Take it away, Dame and Kevin Calabro.

Portland subsequently pulling off what was (at the time) the largest Game 7 road comeback in NBA Playoffs history against the Denver Nuggets to reach the Conference Finals follows closely but it lacks the thrill of calling game from 37 feet away. We will not speak of any Blazers seasons since then.
