Claressa Shields does not smoke weed.
Despite her insistence, Michigan Unarmed Combat Commission (MUCC) claims the “GWOAT” tested positive for marijuana following her triumphant victory over Danielle Perkins earlier this month at Dort Financial Center in Flint, Michigan.
Regulators also deemed her a “threat to public interests.”
“This isn’t breaking and it’s not a thinking face, it was marijuana, no PEDs,” Shields wrote in response to a tweet from veteran reporter, Ariel Helwani. “Also, it’s a temporary suspension until I go to trial for the very petite amount. I’ve never smoked weed. And still the UNDISPUTED WOMEN’S HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION!”
Whether she keeps that title may depend on MUCC sanctions.
The 29 year-old Shields holds a perfect record of 16-0 with three knockouts. In addition, the two-time Olympic gold medalist has never failed a drug test throughout her illustrious career — which has critics of MUCC questioning the controversial drug testing method.
Shields is expected to face a disciplinary hearing in the coming weeks.
