Now that instant replay is a part of professional sports, athletes always need to be aware that every inch and every movement matters. George Springer of the Toronto Blue Jays found that out the hard way on Sunday afternoon against the Athletics.
After safely reaching third base on an Alejandro Kirk double, Springer decided to start hopping up and down on the bag. As he was hopping, Athletic’s third baseman Max Schuemann applied a tag on him in one of the most alert, heads-up plays of the day.
The Athletics ended up challenging the play, where it was determined that Schuemann had the tag on Springer while he was in the air in mid-hop.
That ended the inning and what was, at the time, a Blue Jays rally.
