Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot has insisted that Ruben Amorim is “100%” the right man for the job, pointing out that the Portuguese coach knows what it takes to restore the Red Devils to their past glories.

Dalot spoke to the media after United’s 1-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final.

The defeat not only condemned United to a trophyless season but also cemented this campaign as the worst in the club’s modern history.

Dalot did not shy away from this, in his interview with Andy Mitten for Sony Sports Network.

Asked how he was feeling, Dalot answered, “Obviously sad. It’s hard to find any emotions or anything for you to grab in terms of trying to be positive about something after a very tough season where we just had one opportunity to have a little bit of joy and to have something for you to grab on.”

“And when it is taken away from you, it’s hard to accept. It is hard to put into words. But I also think it sums up a little bit the season that we had…a rollercoaster of emotions, a rollercoaster of results, the inconsistency that we had, and this is going to be a tough time for us to reflect on it.”

“I think we should do that as a club. Obviously, as a dressing room. Everyone at this club, big reflection on you, on this season and try to change things for the next one.”

On whether things can get better and where it’s going wrong for United, Dalot remarked, “I mean it’s even harder to think about it. I’ve been here a while. The last thing I need or last thing I want is to feel that. When you sign for this club, you always want to achieve big things and you want to be a part of something really good.”

“Don’t get me wrong, we had some good moments in the last couple of years but I know what the fans want. That’s where we want to go, believe me. That is what I want to do every day that I wake up, put the club back on top but ultimately we need to be together.”

“I think the last thing we need is to have a separation between us and the fans and I have no power in myself to ask for them to be beside us after what happened this season, but what I can say is that at least we need to start proving they need to keep believing one more time; to be with us and believe that we are going to put the club back where it belongs.”

Asked if Ruben Amorim is the right man to turn things around at Old Trafford, Dalot replied, “100%.”

“Because I see him every day and know how much he suffers, although sometimes he doesn’t show it, but he suffers a lot.”

“He wants to put this club back on top. I think he has the right values, the right standards, the right way to think and we just have to believe as much as him.”

“He has faith in us and he’s always trying to help us and improve. But now it’s our time to step up and obviously do better next season.”
