Caleb Plant vs Armando Resendiz: Undercard and Main Event Results on May 31
Caleb Plant vs. Armando Resendiz
It was time for the main event, as Caleb Plant (23-3, 14 KOs) defended his WBA interim super middleweight title against Armando Resendiz (16-2, 11 KOs). Following a cagey opening two rounds, Plant began to settle, showcasing his impressive hand speed. However, towards the end of the third, Resendiz had some promising moments, landing a straight left and an overhand right.
As the fight reached the halfway point, Plant landed the more eye-catching work, but Resendiz continued to have his moments, landing a big overhand right that wobbled Plant. Resendiz also enjoyed a good seventh, as he showcased poise and impressive shot selection.
Resendiz bossed the eighth, turning Plant and working impressively on the inside. At the end of the ninth, it didn’t look good for “Sweethands,” with the Mexican seemingly firmly in control of the fight.
The pressure from Resendiz and his impressive shot selection were the key in the final few rounds, while Plant’s output remained low. As the final bell sounded, there was no doubt who had won the fight. What a performance from Armando “Toro” Resendiz. The judges’ scorecards read 116-112 twice in favour of Resendiz, while the third card inexplicably scored it 115-113 for Plant. The less said about that 115-113, the better – the right man clearly won the fight and is now the new WBA interim super middleweight champion.
Jermall Charlo vs Thomas LaManna
Jermall Charlo (34-0, 23 KOs) faced Thomas LaManna (39-6-1, 18 KOs) in the super middleweight co-main event. Charlo established his jab early, using it to control the distance in the opening round.
LaManna came out more aggressively in the third, but Charlo dropped him with a sharp overhand right, showing little sign of ring rust despite his inactivity. In the fourth, Charlo continued to dominate, landing a clean left hand that buckled “Cornflake’s” legs. At the start of the fifth, it was confirmed that LaManna’s knee had touched the canvas, making it an official knockdown.
Charlo landed at will in the fifth, including a straight right that scored a third knockdown. Before the start of the sixth, the bout was waved off due to a cut sustained by LaManna.
Jermall “Hit Man” Charlo is officially back.
Yoenli Feliciano Hernandez vs Kyrone Davis
Next up were the middleweights, as the heavy-handed Cuban Yoenli Feliciano Hernandez (8-0, 7 KOs) faced Kyrone Davis (19-4-1, 6 KOs) in the middleweight division. Hernandez started strongly in the opening round, mixing his shots well.
He increased the pressure in the second, landing a powerful left-hand jab that dropped Davis for only the second time in his career. Hernandez used his jab to control the distance and tempo, working off it impressively and varying his attacks with precision. Davis landed two good right hands in the sixth, but it was a rare moment for the American, who was quickly pushed back by the dominant Cuban.
As the fight progressed, Hernandez continued to dominate, landing eye-catching right hands. Davis showed his toughness to hear the final bell, but all three judges’ scorecards read 100-89 in favour of the heavy-handed Cuban.
Isaac Lucero vs Omar Valenzuela
There was no real feeling-out process in the opening fight of the Amazon Prime four-fight extravaganza, as Isaac Lucero (17-0, 13 KOs) and Omar Valenzuela (23-1, 20 KOs) traded eye-catching right hands in the opening round of their super welterweight clash.
In the second round, Lucero began targeting the body with some heavy-looking shots. Valenzuela had his moments, but Lucero landed a sweeping right hand that floored his fellow Mexican. Despite making the count, the 26-year-old Las Vegas native swarmed him with a barrage of punches, prompting the referee to wave the fight off. It felt a little premature, but Valenzuela was taking some heavy punishment.
