A24 has a little treat for the millions (and millions) of combat sports fans.
Former WWE champion Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is crossing over to MMA (like he almost did back in the mid-nineties) for The Smashing Machine, a new movie about the life and times of former UFC fighter Mark Kerr.
The official poster was released on Monday and features Johnson sporting a bad wig.
“The Rock will kill this, he will nail this role,” UFC CEO Dana White told Collider. “I know how serious he’s taking this, I know who’s working with him, and I know how hard he’s working on this film. I think that this could be the opportunity for The Rock to actually be nominated for an Oscar.”
I guess White didn’t attend one of those less-than-promising screenings back in March.
Directed by Benny Safdie, The Smashing Machine also stars Emily Blunt as Dawn Staples, heavyweight boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk as Igor Vovchanchyn, and former Bellator two-division titleholder Ryan Bader as Mark Coleman.
The Smashing Machine is expected to hit theaters in October.
