“It’s amazing, you know, I’ve been saying it all week,” Poirier said during the UFC 318 media day (transcribed by KLFY). “I don’t come from a place with silver spoons, a lot of money. You know, I don’t I don’t come from that. So, all the travels and fights that I’ve had all over the world, a lot of people get don’t get to go. You know, a lot of people missed out on some big moments in person. So, to be so close to home where they can hop in their car and drive to New Orleans and have people in the in the arena, fans, family, friends that never got to see me compete live for this last one is super special.”

Poirier is retiring (win or lose) after UFC 318.

“Last night, laying in bed before I go to sleep like that was my first night checking into my AirBnB here in New Orleans and doing the paperwork,” Poirier continued. “I’m like, ‘Wow, what really happened?’ And this is really, really happening. But I think, like I said, I think it’s just the right time. I don’t want to get retired from the sport. I want this sport to chew me up and I want to walk away. I don’t want it to retire me.”
