Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey will miss the remainder of the 2024-25 season due to a finger tendon injury, as confirmed by his agent Rich Paul. Maxey, 24, has been sidelined since March 3 after initially attempting to rehabilitate a sprained finger. Despite his efforts, the discomfort persisted, leading to the decision to shut him down for the year. Maxey had a standout season before the injury, averaging 26.3 points, 6.1 assists, and 3.3 rebounds, earning his first All-Star selection and being named the NBA’s Most Improved Player for the 2023-24 season.

Maxey’s absence is part of a broader series of injuries that have plagued the 76ers throughout the season, contributing to their disappointing 23-53 record. In addition to Maxey, the team has lost key players including Joel Embiid, Paul George, and rookie Jared McCain. With these injuries, Philadelphia’s hopes of a playoff push have evaporated, and the team now focuses on the lottery for a potential high draft pick.

The 76ers’ current struggles have left them in a precarious position, as they are now the fifth-worst team in the league, two games ahead of the Brooklyn Nets. The team’s main priority now is retaining their top-six-protected first-round pick. If they finish with a pick in the top six, they will keep it; otherwise, it will go to the Oklahoma City Thunder as part of a previous trade deal.

Looking ahead to next season, the 76ers need to reevaluate their roster and put Maxey in a healthier and more sustainable offensive system. With a more balanced team, Maxey can continue to develop, particularly in maintaining his defensive improvements and efficiency. Although this season has been challenging, the Sixers’ future, with players like Maxey and McCain, holds promise.
