Toronto has been awarded a WNBA franchise starting within the 2026 season. The franchise will likely be owned by Kilmer Sports activities Inc., which is run by Larry Tanenbaum.
Tanenbaum is a minority proprietor and chairman of sporting large Maple Leafs Sports activities and Leisure which owns the Maple Leafs, Raptors, TFC, Argos and Marlies.
Tanenbaum reportedly tried to buy the group by MLSE, however different members of the board turned down the chance.
The WNBA lately expanded to 13 groups with San Francisco starting play in 2025.
