Mexican NASCAR driver Daniel Suarez returned to his homeland to compete in this weekend’s doubleheader at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez and came away an unlikely winner in Saturday’s The Chilango 150 for the NASCAR Xfinity Series.

Starting last on the grid after crashing his primary JR Motorsports Chevrolet earlier in the day, the 33-year-old, who won the 2016 NASCAR Xfinity Series championship, overcame an early race accident and steadily worked his way forward to get in position for victory.

“It’s everything I was looking for, just a special day,” said Suárez, who led a race-high 19 of the race’s 65 laps and beat Taylor Gray to the checkered flag by .598 seconds.

“It’s a very special day, very, very special to be here in front of my people, all these people that have supported me for many, many years and known me since my NASCAR Mexico days, now I’m fighting with the big boys,” said Suárez.

Austin Hill came home third for Richard Childress Racing, with Christian Eckes and polesitter Connor Zilisch completing the top five.
