Tim Tszyu stopped Joey Spencer in the fourth round in Newcastle, Australia, ending a two-fight losing streak when Spencer’s corner threw the towel.
Tszyu (25-2, 18 KO) started a smidge tentative in the first couple of rounds, but once he starting showing his old confidence, having felt Spencer out, it was all going one way. Spencer (19-2, 11 KO) once again came up lacking severely against a higher-level opponent, and saw his own modest, three-fight win streak come to an end.
Spencer had a cut on the eye by the time the fight was stopped, and Tszyu was all momentum, picking up the pace and throwing shots with both hands, with very little coming back from the American underdog.
Tszyu, 30, will probably look to get back into real contention now, and the 154 lb ranks hold a lot of potential noteworthy fights, and difficult ones, something Tszyu has never shied away from in his career.
The 25-year-old Spencer is obviously still young and is very willing to get in there and take his chances, but he probably has to start considering where a boxing career is really headed, because he’s come up decisively, clearly wanting for more in his losses to Tszyu and Jesus Ramos.
