The U.S. Men’s National Team is under the spotlight as it prepares for this summer’s CONCACAF Gold Cup—and not just because of the players on the field. The absence of captain Christian Pulisic from the tournament roster has drawn widespread criticism from fans, media, and even former USMNT stars, particularly as the tournament serves as the final competitive window before the 2026 FIFA World Cup on home soil.
U.S. Soccer confirmed that both Pulisic and AC Milan teammate Yunus Musah personally requested to be left off the roster, citing a need for rest following a demanding club season. The decision wasn’t made by head coach Mauricio Pochettino, which fueled even more frustration among critics. While some players are missing due to injuries or Club World Cup obligations, the voluntary nature of Pulisic’s absence has been viewed by many as a lack of commitment at a crucial time.
Donovan vs. Pulisic: A heated debate emerges
U.S. soccer legend Landon Donovan didn’t hold back when speaking on FOX after the UEFA Nations League final, expressing his disappointment at Pulisic’s decision. Without naming him directly, Donovan implied that stepping away from the national team in a key tournament showed a disregard for the responsibility that comes with representing one’s country.
Referencing Cristiano Ronaldo’s effort despite being nearly 40 years old, Donovan remarked: “He played a long season and still gave it everything. Meanwhile, our guys are on vacation and skipping the Gold Cup. It’s frustrating.”

Pulisic responds, clarifies stance
Weeks later, Pulisic addressed the situation on CBS Sports Golazo with Jimmy Conrad and others. He explained that his intention had been to participate in the pre-Gold Cup friendlies before stepping away, but Pochettino declined, preferring roster consistency. “I respected it, but I didn’t fully understand it,” Pulisic said.
“I did want to be a part of at least the two friendlies, but they said no… I had to make the best decision for myself and, in the long run, for my team.”
He acknowledged the public backlash but insisted he doesn’t owe anyone an explanation. However, he admitted that criticism from former players “hurt a little,” as he grew up idolizing many of them.
Mark Pulisic fires back at Donovan
Before Christian made his statement, his father, Mark Pulisic, took to Instagram to defend his son and criticize Donovan. Referencing Donovan’s own sabbatical in 2013—when he missed World Cup qualifiers—Mark shared a screenshot from ChatGPT summarizing that decision and accused Donovan of hypocrisy.

In a fiery caption, he wrote, “This guy is… talking about commitment… look in the mirror + grow a pair and call names out or are you afraid next time you want an interview you will get rejected again.”
While the social media post stirred even more controversy, it also highlighted the ongoing tension between generations of U.S. soccer stars—with the 2026 World Cup looming, the debate over leadership and legacy is just beginning.
