Jota was killed overnight when the Lamborghini he was travelling in came off the road in Zamora, a province in north-west Spain.

The 28-year-old’s brother Andre Silva, who played for Portuguese second-division side Penafiel, was also killed. He was 25.

Jota was a key player for Klopp at Liverpool

Klopp brought Jota to Anfield in 2020 for an initial £41million from Wolves and was rewarded by the Portugal international playing a key role as Liverpool won the FA Cup in 2022, as well as reaching the final of the EFL Cup and Champions League in the same year.

Jota scored nine goals in 37 appearances last season as the Merseysiders won the Premier League under Klopp’s successor, Arne Slot.

The German wrote on Instagram: “This is a moment where I struggle!

“There must be a bigger purpose! But I can’t see it!”

I’m heartbroken – Klopp

He added: “I’m heartbroken to hear about the passing of Diogo and his brother André.

“Diogo was not only a fantastic player, but also a great friend, a loving and caring husband and father!

“We will miss you so much!

“All my prayers, thoughts and power to Rute, the kids, the family, the friends and everyone who loved them!

“Rest in peace – Love J.”
