The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup will bring together 32 of the world’s top clubs, featuring global stars on soccer’s biggest stage. Now in his first experience playing abroad, Sergio Ramos has opened up about Monterrey’s expectations for the revamped competition, which kicks off in June.

Ramos has competed in the world’s most prestigious tournaments with both Real Madrid and Spain national team, winning more than 20 major titles. This year’s expanded Club World Cup will mark a new chapter for the legendary defender. Speaking to FIFA’s official website, Ramos shared his thoughts on what lies ahead:

“For me, playing in these kinds of competitions always brings extra excitement. This one is new because of the format, but it requires a very high level of focus, where any small detail can knock you out. We know we’ll be up against some very important opponents, with big names and lots of history—some from Europe, others from Argentina. These are great matchups, and I’ve always felt the thrill of playing against the best clubs.”

The veteran defender also laid out a realistic goal for the tournament: “The goal is to go toe-to-toe with any opponent. In the end, I believe attitude, commitment, and dedication are non-negotiable in football. No matter what happens, you go home with a clear conscience, knowing you gave your best.

“Our objective is to put in a strong performance, try to make it out of the group stage, and then we’ll see,” he added. Ramos won four Club World Cup titles with Real Madrid, but this edition will present a different challenge for the 39-year-old in Monterrey colors.

Monterrey face tough group in 2025 Club World Cup

Monterrey earned their spot in the 2025 Club World Cup by winning the 2021 CONCACAF Champions Cup over Club America, solidifying their place at the top of the federation. Now, they’ll test their strength on the world stage.

The Mexican club was drawn into Group E, alongside Italy’s Inter Milan, Argentina’s River Plate, and Japan’s Urawa Red Diamonds. Monterrey will open the tournament against Inter on June 17 in what promises to be one of the most competitive groups.

“There are always teams in these tournaments that pull off surprises, so it will depend on how the team is doing mentally and that the whole squad stays healthy. Those are circumstances we’ll have to evaluate once the tournament begins,” Sergio Ramos ended his interview.
