As Helio Castroneves embarks on his first Daytona 500 start on Sunday, another famed open-wheel star may be waiting in the wings for next season’s event.
During final practice for the Great American Race, FOX Sports interviewed six-time NTT IndyCar Series champion Scott Dixon, who was at the track in support of Legacy Motor Club co-owner Jimmie Johnson.
Johnson was teammates with Dixon at Chip Ganassi Racing during his tenure as an IndyCar Series driver from 2021-’22.
When asked whether seeing the race cars on track may give him an “itch” to try the Daytona 500 one day, Dixon swung the door wide open.
“We were just talking about that. Trying to work out how I can do my entry for next year,” Dixon said with a smile.
There’s no telling how serious Dixon was with his answer or how logistics may work out as the months power on to 2026. However, it’s worth noting as one of motorsports’ most successful drivers could perhaps be on his way into the Daytona 500.
