The Champions Trophy 2025 saw a dramatic moment during England‘s clash with South Africa at the National Bank Cricket Arena in Karachi. Joe Root, England’s batting stalwart, fell victim to a stunning delivery by Wiaan Mulder, a dismissal that significantly shifted the momentum in favour of South Africa.

Wiaan Mulder’s magic ball shatters Joe Root’s stumps

Root, who looked steady at the crease with 37 runs off 44 balls, was undone by a brilliant delivery from Mulder in the 18th over. The ball, pitched on a good length, jagged back sharply after pitching. Root attempted to flick it to the leg side but missed the ball entirely as it brushed his pad and crashed into the stumps. The sight of Root’s off-stump cartwheeling sent Mulder into a celebratory frenzy.

This dismissal was not just another wicket—it was a tactical masterpiece. Root, known for his ability to anchor innings and build partnerships, was England’s best hope of recovery after a shaky start. His departure left England reeling at 103/5, a position from which they never recovered.

England’s struggles continue in their last game of the tournament

England’s batting woes were evident throughout their innings. Opting to bat first, they lost wickets at regular intervals and were bundled out for a mere 179 runs in just 38.2 overs. The top order faltered early, with Phil Salt (8), Jamie Smith (0), and Ben Duckett (24) departing cheaply. Despite brief resistance from Root and Harry Brook (19), the middle order crumbled under pressure.

The lower order showed some fight, with Jofra Archer contributing a valuable 25 runs off 31 balls. However, South Africa’s disciplined bowling attack ensured there was no significant recovery. Marco Jansen and Mulder were the pick of the bowlers, claiming three wickets each, while Keshav Maharaj chipped in with two crucial dismissals.

South Africa’s bowling brilliance takes them close to an important win

South Africa’s bowlers executed their plans with precision. Jansen set the tone early by removing Salt and Smith within the first three overs. Mulder’s spell was particularly impactful; his figures of 3/25 in 7.2 overs showcased his ability to exploit conditions effectively. His dismissal of Root was undoubtedly the highlight of the match.

Maharaj’s spin further tightened the screws on England’s middle order, while Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi provided crucial breakthroughs at key moments. The collective effort by South Africa’s bowling unit left England with no room to breathe.

England’s Champions Trophy campaign in tatters

This defeat adds to England’s disappointing run in the Champions Trophy 2025. Having already been eliminated from semifinal contention after their loss to Afghanistan earlier in the tournament, this match against South Africa was an opportunity for redemption. However, their batting frailties once again came to the fore.

Root has been one of England’s few consistent performers in this tournament, including a heroic century against Afghanistan that nearly saved their campaign. Yet, his dismissal against South Africa exposed England’s over-reliance on him. Former cricketers have criticized England’s lack of depth and their inability to build partnerships around Root.
