Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has claimed that manager Ruben Amorim was trying to get the board’s attention with his explosive comment in January that this may be the worst United team in history.

Amorim joined the club in November after Erik ten Hag’s sacking and their league form has been horrific since.

Nonetheless, the former Sporting CP boss has been able to guide his side to an unbeaten run to the final of the Europa League, where they will face Tottenham Hotspur in the final in six days.

Speaking to the Webby and O’Neill YouTube channel Giggs claimed that Amorim’s comments about his side being the worst in the club’s history were quite deliberate.

Elaborating further he stated, “I think first of all, he’s sort of dampening expectations and maybe talking to the powers above to say I need backing and this team needs improving.”

He also claimed that in reality it is impossible to call this team the worst as nobody has seen all versions of the team in history.

Delving further into Amorim’s rationale Giggs claimed, “I think we’ve fallen from the recent levels of history and success, fallen a long way. He’s been truthful when he has come to the club, and he’s probably not expected it to be so bad.”

“So he’s been very open and some people have found it refreshing, some people have had different views, but yeah. It was a surprising quote, but I think it was speaking to the powers above.”

Giggs went on to claim that he wasn’t a huge fan of the lack of wingers in Amorim’s 3-4-3 system but he admits that he carries bias due to his playing days as an electric winger.

Nonetheless, the former United star asserted that this is the path the club have chosen and they must support Amorim in the transfer market with players that fit his particular vision.

“Now you have to back him and give him the players that he needs in that system. They are specialised positions and whether we can get those players is another story.”

Giggs did admit that he found it surprising that his former team made it to the Europa League final considering their league form. He did add though, “in the last few years, we have shown we can win cups, and we have become a sort of cup final team, so it was never out of the picture.”
