Baseball’s top prospect, Roman Anthony, is headed to The Show.
The Red Sox called up Anthony for Monday’s game against the Rays at Fenway Park, where he will bat fifth and start in right field for his MLB debut.
The promotion, which Sox fans have been clamoring for, now brings the consensus No. 1 prospect in baseball to the big leagues just after the Sox took two out of three games against the Yankees over the weekend.
The 21-year-old outfielder has hit .288 in Triple-A Worcester with 10 home runs and 29 RBIs in 58 games and just recently hit a 497-foot grand slam during a 10-4 win over Rochester on Saturday.
“Got it and didn’t really miss it,” Anthony told the Worcester Telegram &Gazette. “So it felt great.”
Anthony now holds the honor of being the youngest player to be called up by the Red Sox since a 20-year-old Rafael Devers was called up in 2017.
And Anthony now joins the Red Sox’s other big-name prospects — Kristian Campbell and Marcelo Mayer — in Boston.
Mayer, who has been a close friend of Anthony’s, was excited for the outfield prospect inside the Red Sox clubhouse on Monday after hearing the news, calling the move ”a long time coming.”
“It has been talked about for a very long time. It’s kind of crazy today’s the day we’re all going to share the field together in the big leagues. I’m super excited. I think we have a really good team and he’s just another addition,” Mayer told MassLive.
“I actually heard through the grapevine here, so right when I heard, I shot him a text and called him.”
A roster spot became open for Anthony after the Red Sox placed Wilyer Abreu om the Injured List, Ken Rosenthal reported.
Anthony had been taken 79th overall in the 2022 draft using a pick that the Red Sox had gotten as a compensation pick after Eduardo Rodríguez turned down a qualifying offer and signed with Detroit.
