Robert Lewandowski’s injury shakes Barcelona: How serious is it ahead of Copa del Rey final vs Real Madrid and UEFA Champions League clash?

NBA insiders say several Knicks players are ‘unhappy’ with the presence of assistant coach Rick Brunson

As Barcelona fans erupted in celebration after an astonishing 4-3 comeback victory over Celta Vigo, a far more unsettling image played out quietly at Montjuic. Robert Lewandowski, the club’s talisman and top scorer, hobbled off the pitch in the 77th minute, clutching the back of his left thigh, casting a heavy shadow over what should have been a triumphant evening for the Catalans.

The dramatic win, capped by Raphinha’s 98th-minute penalty, helped Barcelona extend their lead at the top of La Liga. But the joy of stretching the advantage over Real Madrid to seven points was quickly tempered by a sense of dread. With two of the club’s most critical matches of the season fast approaching—the Copa del Rey final against Real Madrid and the UEFA Champions League semi-final showdown with Inter—Lewandowski’s sudden exit could not have come at a worse time.

The moment of concern unfolded in the second half. With Barcelona chasing the game, Lewandowski suddenly dropped to the turf, wincing and reaching for his left hamstring. Moments later, he signaled for a substitution. Midfielder Gavi came on in his place, but the damage may already have been done.

This injury setback puts a dent in what has otherwise been a phenomenal season for Lewandowski. With 40 goals in 48 appearances across all competitions, including 11 in the Champions League, he has led the line with the same hunger and finesse that made him a legend at Bayern Munich. His leadership and finishing have been critical for a Barcelona side chasing what could still be a historic quadruple.

What did Hansi Flick say?

Barcelona boss Hansi Flick kept his cards close to his chest after the final whistle. Speaking to DAZN España, he said cautiously: “Lewandowski will have an MRI tomorrow. We have to wait for the results. Then we’ll know more about his injury.” During the post-match press conference, Flick reiterated his measured stance: “From my experience, we wait until tomorrow and see what happens.”

No official diagnosis has been released yet, but early reports from Mundo Deportivo suggest a possible muscle tear, which could sideline Lewandowski for up to three weeks. That timeline would mean the 36-year-old striker misses both legs of the Champions League semi-final against Inter, and more urgently, the Copa del Rey final against Real Madrid on April 26 at La Cartuja.

What does it mean for Barcelona?

Flick’s squad is already stretched. Alejandro Balde, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Marc Bernal, and Marc Casado are all unavailable, and now the manager might have to do without his most experienced forward at the most pivotal juncture of the season.

In Lewandowski’s absence, Ferran Torres is the likeliest candidate to lead the line. The Spaniard has been in strong form this season, but replacing the Polish striker’s experience, physicality, and finishing touch will not be easy. There’s even a possibility of experimenting with Dani Olmo as a false nine, though Flick is expected to trust Ferran.
