Rick Macci reveals Coco Gauff’s main weaknesses

Cori Gauff’s start to the season has certainly not lived up to expectations, indeed it is no exaggeration to say that it has been very disappointing. 

The American star – who had started 2025 with important ambitions and with the aim of undermining Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek – is having more difficulties than expected playing her best tennis.

After her elimination in the quarterfinals at the Australian Open – where she was defeated by Paula Badosa – Coco unleashed disastrous performances in the WTA Doha and Dubai being immediately eliminated in both cases.

Gauff struggles more than expected

Gauff has tried to maintain a positive attitude and has been training very hard since her arrival at Indian Wells, where she hoped to make a difference and turn her season around.

However, her run in California ended already in the round of 16 against Belinda Bencic (who prevailed in three sets taking advantage of her rival’s numerous unforced errors).

This means that the American has suffered four defeats in the last six matches she has played, a balance that worries her fans and deserves further investigation.

Through his official X profile, legendary coach Rick Macci revealed what Coco’s main weaknesses are: “Losing makes the problem bubble up. With an athlete like Coco it makes ZERO sense as I said 2 years ago not to Biomechanically modify the forehand/ second serve. It can be done easily. If she went into combat with ATP forehand / Platform serve no doubt be number one but most of all stay there.”

The world number 3 will have about a week to digest this disappointment and practice well for the Miami Open, which should be a tournament more suited to her game.

The young American star needs to regain confidence as soon as possible, in order to prevent her crisis from becoming even more acute.

Cori has already shown that she has remarkable mental strength and the support of her team will be essential in this fairly delicate moment of her career.
