Reilly Opelka responds to scrutiny by shading doubles again

Reilly Opelka is throwing shade at doubles again, this time wearing a t-shirt that was urging fans to watch more of doubles.

In case you somehow missed it, the American made some pretty radical comments about doubles two weeks ago, calling it a competition for “failed singles players” and also calling on the tennis authorities to get rid of it.

To no one’s surprise, such comments quickly draw attention – and not only from fans – but also from fellow players.

While Opelka has received pretty strong criticism and backlash for his stance, he doesn’t seem to feel sorry a bit for his harsh comments.

On Instagram, the 27-year-old posted a photo in which he can be seen rocking a t-shirt that had “watch more doubles” written on.

A week ago, he did something similar after changing his Instagram bio to #watchmoredoubles.

What Opelka exactly said about doubles?

“I was being sarcastic they should 100% get rid of dubs,” the four-time ATP champion wrote on Instagram.

“It’s for failed singles players, there’s no such thing as a ‘doubles specialist’.. they don’t sell a single ticket, they take up practice courts/physios/resources they don’t turn a profit and they complain that they don’t make enough $$.

“That’s pretty greedy behavior if you ask me.”

After saying that tennis should remove dubs, Opelka offered an alternative situation – if it were to stay – then have only top singles players competing.

“There are so few that it doesn’t move the needle.. the best solution would be to cut the doubles draw down to 8 teams and only allow singles player to enter. Or… just get rid of it,” he added at the time.

Meanwhile, the American was scheduled to play at the Indian Wells Masters but he returned his wildcard and won’t play in the desert due to injury.
