It was about time that the Sox traded for a relief pitcher ahead of the trade deadline. The Twins will be acquiring minor league prospect Andy Lugo from the Red Sox in the trade deal.
Jorge Alcala Will Be a Much Welcomed Addition to the Red Sox Bullpen
The news of the trade deal was first reported by MLB insider and senior writer for FanSided, Robert Murray. Furthermore, MLB analyst and a staunch supporter of the Red Sox, Nathan Gordon, shared the breaking news via a post on X.com. He also shared the news from Red Sox beat writer Chris Cotillo that, as a part of the trade deal, the Sox would be sending minor league prospect Lugo to the Twins.

In the current campaign, Alcala has thrown in 22 games with the Twins. He has an ERA of 8.88 with a 1.808 WHIP, 28 strikeouts, and 15 walks in 24.1 innings pitched. The 29-year-old Dominican had initially signed with the Houston Astros as an international free agent in Dec 2014. He, alongside one other minor league prospect, was traded to the Twins in 2018.
Alcala finally made his much-awaited MLB debut in 2019. After more than five years in Minnesota, he is now moving to join the Red Sox, who announced that they have DFA’d right-handed relief pitcher Brian Van Belle to make room for Alcala in the 40-man roster.
Injuries Have Hampered the Boston Red Sox’s Performance in 2025
The Red Sox have three pitchers from their starting rotation on the IL. This list includes Patrick Sandoval, Tanner Houck, and Kutter Crawford. Alongside these starters, there are multiple relievers who are on lengthy IL stints, which have affected the ballclub’s bullpen depth in 2025.
Besides the pitchers, the Red Sox are suffering with multiple injuries to their positional players as well. Triston Casas has been ruled out for the entire season, while Mastaka Yoshida was sent on a 60-day IL. Their star third baseman, Alex Bregman, and right fielder, Wilyer Abreu, are still on the IL, hoping to complete their recovery soon.
The Red Sox started the 2025 campaign on a high but then hit a slump, which has now landed them in the fourth spot in the AL East standings. With a 34-36 overall record, they are still two games behind the .500 mark and nine behind the current division leaders, the New York Yankees.
