Real Betis are reportedly aiming to sign Antony on an initial loan deal with an obligation to buy him at the end of next season, but they want Manchester United’s help in paying a portion of his wages.

Betis are keen on extending Antony’s stay after an extremely successful spell during the latter half of the 2024/25 campaign.

Antony lost his place in the team under Erik ten Hag and failed to break into Ruben Amorim’s plans, prompting a January loan move to Betis. He enjoyed an uptick in form at Seville, notching an impressive nine goals and five assists in 26 appearances across all competitions.

The Brazilian played a key role in helping Betis secure a top-six finish in La Liga and reach the Conference League final, where they ultimately suffered a heavy defeat to Chelsea.

Los Verdiblancos have been very clear about their desire to sign Antony permanently, although they have so far shown an unwillingness to meet United’s asking price for the forward. A report covered by The Peoples Person late last month relayed that Betis were exploring a part-ownership deal for Antony.

Under this arrangement, United would retain a percentage of Antony’s registration rights, almost a sell-on clause,  which could earn them a substantial windfall if he is sold in the future.

Now, ABC Sevilla [via SportWitness] have given an update on the situation, indicating that United and Betis are at an impasse over Antony.

It’s understood that all parties are aware that Antony is eager to join Betis and the Spanish outfit want him as well, but negotiations remain stalled with several crucial details yet to be agreed. Betis are confident about their chances of getting a deal over the line but there are still “many loose ends” that need to be sorted out

The report states that Betis want another loan deal with an obligation to buy after the 2025/26 season. However, Antony’s hefty salary is a major sticking point, with Betis needing United to contribute towards the 25-year-old’s wages.

When Antony moved to Betis last season, Betis were covering around 84 per cent of his salary, while United took care of the rest.

In terms of the part-ownership, ABC Sevilla explain that the idea is viewed as mutually beneficial and it could get the green light once the figures are agreed.

So, while the deal is currently deadlocked and much remains uncertain, things could move very quickly once there is a breakthrough in talks.
