The Los Angeles Rams took care of their most pressing need this offseason by agreeing to a restructured contract with Matthew Stafford for the 2025 season.
The two-time Pro Bowler will return as the team’s starting quarterback for at least one more year. As for who will be behind Stafford on the depth chart is still uncertain.
Stetson Bennett remains under contract, but he has yet to take a snap in the NFL and the Rams would presumably like to have another option on their roster with more experience.
A possible solution could be re-signing Jimmy Garoppolo, who spent the 2024 season as the team’s backup quarterback. “We would love to bring him back,” head coach Sean McVay said of Garoppolo.
“I obviously have been very busy working through the Matthew situation. That’s the hope and anticipation. Now, you guys know that there might be some other interest and Jimmy’s earned the right to be able to have that type of interest.
“But yes, if you said, would I want Jimmy back here to be able to work in the quarterback room with [Quarterbacks Coach] Dave Ragone and Matthew and those guys? The answer is absolutely yes.”
Garoppolo signed a one-year contract with the Rams for the 2024 season after spending the previous campaign as the Las Vegas Raiders’ starting quarterback.
The 33-year-old began his career with the New England Patriots but didn’t really get a chance to shine until he was traded to the San Francisco 49ers in 2017. Garoppolo went 38-17 in parts of six seasons as the 49ers’ starting quarterback.
He made one start for the Rams in their 2024 regular season finale and nearly led them to a comeback win over the Seattle Seahawks.
Garoppolo seemed to enjoy his time with the Rams and would be a great player to keep around if the sides are able to work out a new contract this offseason.
Sean McVay: Rams will adjust Matthew Stafford’s contract on ‘year-to-year basis’
Financial details of Matthew Stafford’s new contract with the Rams have not been revealed, but it is believed the team gave him a significant raise to prevent him from going elsewhere.
Sean McVay said the Rams will continue adjusting Stafford’s contract on a year-to-year basis for as long as he wants to play.
Things got a little dicey, but McVay maintained that the Rams wanted Stafford back and he was happy they were able to get it done.
