Rams Waive Wide Receiver Quintez Cephus

The Los Angeles Rams announced they have waived wide receiver Quintez Cephus.

The Rams originally signed Cephus to their practice squad last September following his release from the Houston Texans. Cephus then signed a reserve/futures deal with Los Angeles but now will not join the team for training camp next month.

A fifth-round pick of the Detroit Lions in the 2020 NFL Draft, the wide receiver has played sparingly throughout his career. Cephus had some flashes for Detroit his rookie year, but injuries plagued him in the 2021 and 2022 seasons. He then was suspended indefinitely by the NFL for illegally betting on games, though he was later reinstated in April of 2024.

Cephus signed with the Bills but was released shortly after during OTAs. He then signed with the Texans and was released a month later.

Cephus was never considered a serious option to make the final 53-man roster for the 2025 season and served as a depth option during OTAs. The veteran has only produced 37 receptions for 568 yards and four touchdowns, so there isn’t much upside. Him being waived clears one more obstacle for rookie Konata Mumpfield whom the Rams selected in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft.

Los Angeles’ receiver depth is solid entering the season as Puka Nacua and Davante Adams are set to lead the way. Tutu Atwell re-signed on a one-year deal and is line to handle No. 3 duties, though head coach Sean McVay may need to find ways to work in players like Jordan Whittington and Mumpfield.

Receiver shouldn’t be as big of a need for L.A. as they’ve also utilized more 12 personnel in recent seasons. The team drafted Terrence Ferguson with the No. 46 overall pick, so they surely plan to use him and Tyler Higbee this upcoming season.

The Rams are being touted as one of the favorites to represent the NFC in next year’s Super Bowl as they went on a run in the second half of the 2024 season to win the NFC West and make the 2025 NFL Playoffs. Los Angeles came the closest to beating the Philadelphia Eagles, so they have reason to feel optimistic about their chances.

For now, L.A. will need to focus on using training camp and the preseason to get right for a pivotal 2025 season.

Sean McVay really glad Rams re-signed Derion Kendrick

While Quentez Cephus was waived, the Rams re-signed Derion Kendrick after he was previously waived. After he re-signed, Sean McVay expressed he was really glad to have him back.
