QB coach explains how Bo Nix wants to improve after rookie season

Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix became one of the positive surprises of this past NFL season as the 2024 first-round draft pick emerged as an Offensive Rookie of the Year Award candidate and as he guided the club to a wild-card playoff berth.

For a piece published on Thursday, The Athletic’s Nick Kosmider spoke with David Morris, Nix’s personal quarterbacks coach, about how the 25-year-old is working this offseason “to improve the generation and transfer of power in the torso while focusing on the movements that help the shoulder move more efficiently” on passing plays.

“It’s going to be rotational strength,” Morris explained. “It’s going to be trying to get faster and trying to get stronger, better change of direction. …I’d say Bo is kind of a junkie for really getting into quarterback-specific training. So I think in general it’s going to be a holistic approach.”

Many within the NFL community criticized Broncos head coach Sean Payton after Payton made Nix the 12th overall pick of last year’s draft. Nix then silenced critics by enjoying a season that resulted in him finishing third in OROTY voting.

Per Pro Football Reference, he ended the regular season ranked 12th in the NFL with 3,775 passing yards and sixth with 29 passing touchdowns. His 93.3 passer rating was higher than the league average (92.3) for that category.

Some said last winter that Nix should spend a significant portion of his rookie season serving as a backup. He instead started every game from Week 1 through the 31-7 wild-card playoff loss to the Buffalo Bills. At the very least, analysts are now wondering if Nix can develop into a top-10 signal-caller.

“The details are everything with Bo,” Morris added about how Nix is tackling offseason assignments. “He’s type A, a perfectionist, and he’s really intense about the way he works — you can call it old-school work habits. So if you can pinpoint two, three, four areas where you can really improve and grow and key on, that’s super important. They have so much data and so much film from Bo’s first year that allows you to be detailed and have a good plan.”

As of Thursday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook had Nix at +3500 betting odds to win the 2025 Most Valuable Player Award. To compare, 2023 MVP finalists Brock Purdy of the San Francisco 49ers and Dak Prescott of the Dallas Cowboys were also at +3500 odds as of Thursday.
