Director of rugby Frans Steyn believes the Cheetahs would profit extra from inclusion in Tremendous Rugby than enjoying in European cup competitions.

“The French didn’t need us within the Problem Cup,” Frans Steyn revealed at a press convention the place the Cheetahs squad was unveiled for his or her 2024-25 Problem Cup opener towards Perpignan in Amsterdam on Sunday.

“I may also see how significantly the French take their European competitors… I believe South African groups being in European cups undoubtedly harm the competitions in some people’ viewpoint.”

Requested to touch upon the worth of the Champions and Problem Cup to South African groups, Steyn answered: “Do you need to know if I believe South African groups must be in Tremendous Rugby or the northern hemisphere? The Free State would like to be part of Tremendous Rugby, or they need to give us a everlasting competitors within the northern hemisphere, however enjoying 4 video games away from residence after which struggling to search out sport time for the remainder of the season is troublesome for us.”

The Cheetahs don’t take part within the Vodacom United Rugby Championship and their inclusion within the Problem Cup – which solely ensures 4 pool matches to qualify for the knockout rounds – is by invitation on an annual foundation, and their residence video games are hosted in Amsterdam.

“I believe the Cheetahs wouldn’t thoughts enjoying in Tremendous Rugby,” Steyn added. “We need to play an attacking model of rugby; in Europe you want a giant pack of forwards.”

Steyn believes the squad is best ready to make a deep run within the Problem Cup this yr after advancing to the semi-finals of the 2024 Currie Cup.

“In our pack we’ve received nice expertise, I can’t wait to see what the blokes do on Sunday. We had a fantastic preseason and the blokes are in good spirits – hopefully we see that on the sector. I simply hope we will play one of many video games in Bloemfontein so we will present the groups what we will do.”
