PQOTD: This Story Has Long Since Become Tired Edition

Tyreek Hill! Yes, this is yet another post about Hill, and while some might complain, I argue that he is the one, via his own poorly thought-out actions, that keeps these stories coming, not us. Although Hill is one of the top players in the NFL and often serves as the engine driving the Miami Dolphins’ entire offense, he isn’t without his drawbacks. From what I can see, aside from being an elite player, Hill was a great teammate- until he wasn’t. I understand emotions run high, but it’s hard to accept that a guy who was made the highest-paid wideout and then had his contract reworked to align with others who later surpassed him believes he has the right to lose his cool simply because he dislikes losing and chooses to quit on the team.

I respect the frustration and can understand the part about being upset. However, when you are the second highest-paid player on the team, behind only the quarterback, you are expected to show up for work and perform your damn job, at the VERY LEAST, regardless of how you feel about the current situation. Moreover, you are undoubtedly expected to lead by example. I doubt any of us, no matter how seriously we take our jobs, could show up to work, pull some childish stunt like that, and continue unscathed; additionally, it’s most likely that none of us are doing our jobs for anything even close to what he gets. Then there are the off-the-field “issues”. Seriously, WTF is he doing? This is one of those things that we have to almost expect to happen every six months or so.

Can this grown man not go six months without experiencing some negative incident? I understand the argument that he hasn’t done anything wrong here or there, but that’s not always the case. Additionally, there are 53 men on the roster, and miraculously, the rest of the team manages to live their lives daily with almost no negative stories about any of them. Not even these incidents where the police must be called despite “no crime being committed.” I know that eventually, some other Phins player will be in the news for something foolish, but that will most likely be followed by some statement from the team, a public apology from the player, and that’s the end. Most of those players somehow manage to do what Hill cannot and keep their name out of the news even a second time.

Even without this latest “incident”, whatever it was, the team was widely rumored to be shopping Hill, and the list of teams that were rumored to be interested is extensive. While I suspect that much of those rumors are just that, rumors, any long-time fan knows that most rumors with this much smoke around them tend to have a little, if not a lot, of truth to it. I don’t know if the team has shopped him or just put out feelers to see what he would bring. Maybe teams have contacted the Dolphins to inquire if he’s available. I also believe any player, even one as impactful as Hill, should be available for trade at any time for the right price.

Some fans also believe that he can’t be traded due to his salary. If he is traded before the draft, it would cost the team an additional $ 600K to not have him on the roster, yet teams have absorbed much larger salaries to offload players they no longer want. Yes, he would then be an almost 30-million-dollar dead space in your cap, but then he’s off your books, and you can move on much like Denver did with Russell Wilson. Additionally, while you would have to eat a large chunk of the cap before the draft, if his trade were to return enough in draft picks, that could provide you with some players at needed positions at very low cap numbers in return for not only this season but the next few helping the team get an out of control cap situation back in line. If you wait until after the draft and make him a post-June 1st trade, it counts $12,728,750 in dead cap space and saves $14,970,000 against the cap. Both scenarios could make sense for the proper return.

So tonight’s PQOTD is not if they should trade Tyreek or your take on this latest “incident”. Our question of the day is:

If the team were to trade Tyreek Hill, no matter your take on whether it should or should not happen, what would be a return that you would either be happy with or at least be able to live with as a fan?
