Paul Pierce Says He’s the Most Equipped Scorer Ever

Paul Pierce most equipped scorer

In a recent episode of Fox Sports’ Speak, Paul Pierce pushed back in bold fashion after LeBron James declared Kevin Durant the NBA’s “most equipped scorer” in history. Pierce unapologetically inserted himself into the debate – and fans quickly fired back.

The Backstory: LeBron, KD, and the “Most Equipped” Moniker

LeBron James, known for his thoughtful evaluations of NBA talent, recently called Kevin Durant the most “equipped” scorer the game has ever seen. That praise came on LeBron’s podcast, Mind the Game, where he credited Durant’s combination of length and skill—his ability to get shots off over anyone—as giving him a unique scoring edge.

Paul Pierce’s Response on Speak

During the July episode of Speak on FS1, co-host Keyshawn Johnson prompted Pierce about LeBron’s Durant remarks. Pierce jumped in:

“Shoot, you gotta put me in that conversation when you talk about the most equipped scorers, c’mon Bron.”“I shot more bad shots than Kevin… But I can do all of it. Pull up from the elbow, knock down the 3, turnaround, dunk – I could do all of it.”

Pierce conceded Durant’s efficiency advantage—he admitted, “I shot more bad shots than Kevin” because Durant is 7 feet tall and can shoot over nearly everyone. But Pierce insisted the breadth of his scoring arsenal qualified him just as much as KD, if not more so.

Watch the Moment

Here’s the clip of Pierce making the case on Speak:

Internet Reacts: Fans Lost It

Paul Pierce’s confident claims went viral immediately. NBA fans on social media reacted with shock, disbelief, and plenty of trolling:

One fan wrote, “He’s not even a top 50 scorer of all time.”
Another quipped, “For a guy nicknamed The Truth, he sure does lie a lot.”
Another comment: “I love the Truth, but he needs to slow down.”

The reactions were merciless—media outlets covered the backlash with headlines like “NBA fans ruthlessly troll Paul Pierce” and called it perhaps the worst take of the offseason.

Kevin Durant’s Respectful Reply

Kevin Durant himself weighed in—without mockery. On Instagram, KD wrote that he didn’t really see a weakness in Pierce’s game, and he appreciated where the confidence came from. That reaction contrasted sharply with many fans’ scathing responses.

Putting It in Perspective: Pierce vs. Durant

Career Scoring Profile

Paul Pierce: 19 year NBA career (1998–2017), mostly with the Boston Celtics. Career scoring average: 19.7 ppg, total 26,397 points. A ten-time All-Star, NBA champion, Finals MVP, and member of the NBA 75th Anniversary Team.
Kevin Durant: Still active—36 (born 1988), playing for the Phoenix Suns. Career average ~27 ppg, four-time scoring champion, NBA MVP, two-time Finals MVP, among the top 10 all-time scorers as of 2025.

What Pierce Means by “Equipped”

When Paul Pierce uses the term “most equipped,” he’s referring to versatility—his ability to score from all areas of the court: from mid-range elbow jumpers, catch and shoot threes, post-ups, mid-post jab steps, floaters, and drives. He argued he had more volume and range than Durant in some areas (like post moves), even though Durant had the advantage in size and efficiency.

Why Fans Exploded Online

Pierce’s bravado struck many as nostalgic hero worship or a misplaced sense of hubris—backed by a career solid but not elite in efficiency:

His career field goal percentage (44.5%) trails Durant’s 50.1% by a wide margin.
While Pierce ranks 23rd in all-time scoring, his peak and volume don’t always match up to legends like Durant, Jordan, Kobe, or LeBron.
Fans felt he overstated his place in history—leading to rapid-fire memes and takes across X, Reddit, and fan forums.

Why the Debate Matters

Conversations like this tap into broader NBA fandom dynamics: respect for generational icons, debates over peak efficiency vs. volume, and how context shapes “greatness.” Pierce’s boldness reignited conversation not just about Durant vs. LeBron vs. Kobe, but about what parameters define “most equipped.”

Was Pierce simply trying to reclaim his legacy? Or was it a genuine belief in his diverse game? Either way, it worked: people are still talking.

Paul Pierce didn’t hold back. On Fox Sports’ Speak, he inserted himself into the conversation LeBron started—calling himself one of the most “equipped” scorers ever. His comments were met with blistering fan criticism, yet also drew a respectful nod from Durant himself. In the end, the debate shows: when it comes to NBA scoring debates, nothing sparks the internet like confidence from a legend.
