Paddy Pimblett couldn’t prevent the tears from flowing after his good friend and teammate Molly McCann retired from mixed martial arts on Saturday.
‘Meatball’ fell her to second straight defeat at UFC London, making it four losses from her last five outings inside the octagon. While she never reached the heights that some of her peers have managed, the Brit is a staple in UK women’s MMA and has managed some unforgettable moments during her years competing.
Molly McCann was submitted late into the first round against Alexia Thainara; an eccentric Brazilian who accepted the fight on short notice. McCann stuck around after losing to announce her retirement to her home country fans before laying down her gloves in the center of the cage.
“I started this sport at 24, I walked into that gym with these three boys and I’ve [given] you all my f***ing heart and soul,” McCann said during her retirement speech.
Paddy Pimblett, who was in attendance to witness his friend’s retirement, was visibly emotional.
Throughout his rise through the rankings under the UFC banner, Pimblett has had McCann by his side. The pair have competed at several of the same events in the past, though UFC 304 would unknowingly be their final time sharing a card.

Following the event, Paddy Pimblett shared a heartfelt message on social media directed at Molly McCann and her admirable career in the sport.
“Heartbreaking night last night watching my big sister retire,” Pimblett said. “Been there with her from the start and will always be there.”
“This may be the end of her fighting career but it’s far from the end of mine and her friendship. That’s til’ death do us part.”
“UKMMA women’s legend. First English woman to get a win in the UFC and has one of the best knockouts in women’s UFC and combat sports history. Her legacy will live on forever.”
