Wayne Rooney helped himself to all four goals as Manchester United beat Hull City at Old Trafford on this day in 2010.
He scored his first goal in the eighth minute before adding three more in the final ten minutes of the game.
The first was an easy tap-in from close range after a long-distance shot from Paul Scholes crashed against the post and fell kindly at Rooney’s feet.Rooney’s second was a crashing drive from inside the box, beating Hull goalkeeper Boaz Myhill at his near post. His hat-trick was complete shortly after with a free header from just outside the six-yard box after a great cross from Nani on the right wing.
There was still enough time for Rooney to add his fourth of the game. His strike partner Dimitar Berbatov set him up after controlling a forward pass from Ji-Sung Park.Rooney took the ball down and still had work to do as three Hull defenders were in close-proximity. He took a couple of touches to give himself a bit of space before firing low into the back of the net.
Victory moved Manchester United to the top of the table and Hull City stayed in the relegation zone. Manchester United ended the season in second place, just a point behind champions Chelsea. Hull were relegated after finishing five points clear of safety in 19th. They returned to the top flight in 2013 and stayed for two seasons, before being relegated back to the Championship.
They were promoted back in their first season in the second tier but would immediately go back down and have not returned.
