The last Steel City Derby to be played in the top flight took place on this day in 1994, with the bragging rights going to Sheffield Wednesday after a 3-1 win over bitter rivals Sheffield United.
The game was played at Hillsborough and Wednesday manager Trevor Francis was awarded the Premier League Manager of the Month award before kick-off. This is so often a curse as a manager’s teams lose in the next game after their managers receive recognition for their efforts.
Wednesday broke the deadlock in the 58th minute. Mark Bright had an easy tap in after Alan Kelly pushed a shot right into his path.Defender Andy Pearce doubled the home side’s lead shortly after with a bullet header from an Andy Sinton corner. Gordon Watson then latched on to a huge goal kick from Kevin Pressman to add a third.
Dane Whitehouse scored in the 87th minute to give United fans something to cheer, but it was too little too late and the majority of the 34,959 crowd left Hillsborough happy.
