This past Saturday night, April 26, OKTAGON 70 took place in Karlovy Vary and more than lived up to its billing as one of the best cards ever put on by the organisation. Eight matchups on the ten bout lineup ended in a stoppage, seven of which came by highlight-reel knockouts. All quarterfinalists in the €1 million Tipsport Gamechanger middleweight tournament are now confirmed and the strawweight champion defended her belt at the first time of asking.
In the main event, Dominik Humburger (10-2) made an immediate impact in his new home by stopping ‘Pirát’ Krištofič (17-7)due to strikes, advancing in the European MMA Champions League. During the first round, it was Krištofič who was leading the battle, hurting his adversary on a number of occasions but the professional soldier rallied to close the show in the second frame. It was a star-making performance in his promotional debut and Humburger now looks to take his career to heights it has never seen before.
Vlasto Čepo (13-3) delivered a stunning knockout over Erhan Kartal (12-3) in round one to progress in the middleweight bracket as part of the co-main event. ‘El Chapo’ threw bombs from the opening seconds and Kartal was just as happy to return what was coming in his direction. However, the power of Čepo proved too much for the Austrian just after the four-minute mark, as he continued his scary 100% finishing rate.
Also in the opening round of the €1 million Tipsport Gamechanger, Krzysztof Jotko (26-6, 1NC) utilised his wrestling and tricky top game to smother Ion Surdu (16-7) over fifteen hard-fought minutes. Piotr Wawrzyniak (14-6)landed a thunderous left hook on Marek Mazúch (9-3) to ensure that two Polish athletes would be represented in the final eight.
Elsewhere on the card, Mallory Martin (11-6) retained her strawweight title against Eva Dourthe (9-7) by unanimous decision to take the gold back home to America. Andrej Kalašnik (13-5) picked up the most impressive win of his career by knocking outMáté Kertész (15-9, 1NC) at welterweight and Daniel Škvor (9-4) sent Marc Doussis (9-5, 1NC) crashing to the canvas with a huge left hand in their light heavyweight contest.
