‘Of course we’re angry’ – Kompany furious after 10-man Bayern suffer shock Bundesliga defeat to Bochum

Vincent Kompany could not hide his frustration after his Bayern Munich side threw away a two-goal lead as Bundesliga strugglers Bochum cam back to win 3-2.

Bochum, currently 16th in the table, spoiled Bayern’s 125-year anniversary celebrations as Jakov Medic, Ibrahima Sissoko and Matus Bero completed a remarkable comeback after a Raphael Guerreiro brace had put the league leaders in a commanding position.

Bayern’s woes were compounded by Joao Palhinha’s dismissal for a reckless challenge on Giorgos Masouras and Serge Gnabry missing from the penalty spot between Guerreiro’s goals.

Bayern’s regular spot-kick, Harry Kane, was one of 10 changes to the side that beat Leverkusen 3-0 in the Champions League in midweek.

Despite the result, which marks only Kompany’s second league defeat since becoming manager, Bayern remain in a commanding position at the top of the table, eight points clear of second-place Leverkusen.

The Belgian, however, appeared in no mood to sugar-coat the defeat, insisting he was not looking for excuses.

“Congratulations to VfL [Bochum]. It’s very unpleasant for us,” Kompany said.

“We started well, but we must never get a red card. But even with 10 men we have to win this game or at least not lose. That didn’t happen today. We are not looking for excuses or apologies, we lost.

“We will analyse it and must take responsibility for it. It is important that we concentrate on the reaction. Even with 10 men, we must have the ambition to win the game or at least not to lose.

“We did not manage that. Bochum deserves to feel that they have won, I know how much energy it takes to do that. For us, it is now about the next game.”

When asked about his feelings on Palhinha’s red card, Kompany was equally candid.

“It was a red card. It’s an unnecessary discussion

“We got a red card, we lost. We don’t need to talk so much. We lost and we have to react on the pitch now. Of course we’re angry. The reaction to that is important now.”

Kompany and co. travel to Leverkusen for the second leg of their Champions League Round of 16 on Tuesday before returning to domestic duties at Union Berlin on Saturday.
