Canelo – Crawford Meet At First Press Conference

Former popular world titlist Nicholas Walters fought for another shot at greatness on Saturday. For the 39 year old veteran battled a far younger Luis Torres as part of a PROBOX TV card that was broadcast live from Long Beach, California.

Walters was sharp in the opening round, hitting hard and exuding confidence. The second round saw Torres putting his punches together effectively. Both fighters traded well in the third. The older Walters, however, was dropped near the end of the round. To his credit, however, Walters was able to beat the count. Still, Walters’ corner stopped the fight before the bell sounded to start round four.

It’s always sad to see a fighter reach the end of a career, and it seems like Walters has perhaps (hopefully) reached the end of the professional prizefighting road. Still, it’s good to keep in mind that Walters was once a respected, and even feared, world champion. His destruction of Nonito Donaire will likely be seen as the high point of an impressive run in the ring. Indeed, before Saturday’s fight, Walters’ only loss had come at the gloved fists of the great Vasyl Lomachenko. No small thing, to be sure.
