Newcastle turn attention to Wissa after Ekitike snub

Newcastle United are ramping up their interest in highly-rated Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford, as they prepare a move for the 22-year-old talent ahead of the summer transfer window. According to Football Insider, Trafford has emerged as a top target for the Magpies — with West Ham United also in the frame.

Rising Star: James Trafford’s Breakthrough Season

After a rocky Premier League debut season following his move from Manchester City to Burnley in July 2023, James Trafford has found his footing in the Championship. Despite Burnley’s struggles, the young England international has impressed with his commanding presence and shot-stopping abilities.

Trafford has recorded a jaw-dropping 28 clean sheets in just 40 appearances this season, conceding a mere 12 goals — numbers that highlight his potential to shine on the Premier League stage.

Newcastle’s Goalkeeping Puzzle

With first-choice keeper Nick Pope struggling with recurring injuries, Newcastle are actively searching for a reliable long-term option between the sticks. Trafford fits the bill perfectly — young, homegrown, and brimming with potential.

The Magpies have reportedly tried to land him in the past, and their renewed interest signals a fresh push to secure his services.

West Ham Also in the Race

West Ham United aren’t far behind in this chase. With Alphonse Areola and Lukasz Fabianski nearing the twilight of their careers, the Hammers are in dire need of fresh blood in goal. Trafford could be a smart investment for their long-term project.

Final Verdict

With both Newcastle and West Ham circling, the summer could mark a major turning point in Trafford’s career. A Premier League return seems inevitable — the only question is, where will he land?
