Newcastle United have decided not to press ahead with their interest in Benfica midfielder Orkun Kokcu, according to O Jogo. The Portuguese publication has revealed that with Kokcu deciding to sign for Besiktas, Premier League club Newcastle have abandoned their pursuit of the Turkey international midfielder in the summer transfer window.
Kokcu joined Besiktas from Feyenoord in 2023. During his time at Feyenoord, the 24-year-old worked with current Liverpool manager Arne Slot. Kokcu won the Eredivisie title in the 2022-23 season and the Johan Cruyff Shield in 2018.
During his time at Benfica so far, Kokcu has won Taca da Liga and the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira. The midfielder has scored 19 goals and given 22 assists in 98 matches in all competitions for the Portuguese giants. For Feyenoord, Kokcu scored 32 goals and gave 26 assists in 175 appearances.
