New York Knicks Ask Permission to Speak to Jason Kidd for Head Coach Role

The New York Knicks are preparing to take the next step in their head coaching search by formally seeking permission to speak with Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd, according to veteran NBA reporter Marc Stein (via The Stein Line).

This move follows the recent firing of Tom Thibodeau, who led New York to the Eastern Conference Finals before being let go by owner James Dolan.

“The New York Knicks are expected to formally request permission to speak to the Dallas Mavericks’ Jason Kidd about their coaching vacancy in coming days, league sources say,” writes Stein. While the Knicks have yet to finalise a list of top targets, “some in league coaching circles believe that Kidd… is at the top of New York’s wish list.”

Kidd shares a strong history with Knicks star Jalen Brunson, having coached him during their shared time in Dallas.

Sources stress that Brunson’s frustrations in Dallas stem from contract negotiations, not coaching, making the Kidd connection even more relevant.

The Knicks still face two major hurdles – one of them being will the Mavericks allow the conversation to take place. While it’s standard for teams to grant permission if the coach is interested, things become complicated when serious talks begin, especially with Kidd under contract through 2027.

Compensation, often in the form of draft picks, would be required. “The Knicks are not flush with draft picks to send to Dallas,” notes Stein.

The second question centers on Kidd’s interest. ESPN’s Tim MacMahon said on the “Hoop Collective” podcast that Kidd’s “ears would perk up” at the idea of coaching in New York. “The Knicks need to bring in a relationship guy,” MacMahon added. “And Kidd fits that bill.”

The Mavericks remain stacked with talent, including Anthony Davis, and a recovering Kyrie Irving, which could entice Kidd to stay. However, the changing dynamics after Mark Cuban’s departure and the Luka Doncic trade may shift his thinking.

If Kidd, and reportedly Ime Udoka, are off the table, New York’s options could narrow quickly. Michael Malone and Mike Brown are both experienced names, though concerns linger about whether either would be a clear upgrade over Thibodeau. Taylor Jenkins also remains available.

For now, the Knicks’ coaching search remains wide open, and increasingly complex.
