Transfer to Al Hilal ‘first option’ with Club World Cup looming… but Al Ahli ‘could be next club’

Worrying news for MLS and coach Javier Mascherano’s squad, as a new report has delved into the likelihood of Lionel Messi remaining at Inter Miami next year. His arrival redefined the league. His performances reignited global interest in American soccer. But now, Lionel Messi’s future in Major League Soccer is veiled in uncertainty — and the possible outcomes are sending ripples of concern through the league, Miami, and the club’s coaching setup.

When Lionel Messi signed with Inter Miami in 2023, it was a landmark moment not only for the club but for the entire league. The World Cup-winning Argentine didn’t just bring his unparalleled talent — he brought the world’s attention. In his first season, he inspired the Herons to their first-ever trophy by winning the 2023 Leagues Cup, and followed it up with the 2024 Supporters’ Shield. His presence elevated the club from mid-table obscurity to one of the league’s most dominant forces.

Off the pitch, the Messi effect was just as powerful. Attendance soared. Global viewership skyrocketed. The buzz was back.

But now, the euphoria is giving way to unease. The superstar veteran’s contract expires in December 2025, and while club co-owner Jorge Mas previously expressed confidence in an extension, no agreement has been reached yet.

What are Messi’s chances of remaining with Miami?

“As of May 1, Lionel Messi has not signed a contract extension with Inter Miami. The same is true for [Jordi] Alba, [Sergio] Busquets, and [Luis] Suarez,” reported Jose Armando of Claro Sports. According to his sources, the chances of Messi staying at Inter Miami next year currently stand at just 50%.

That 50% figure casts a long shadow. MLS, and particularly Inter Miami, have built their next chapter around the Argentine icon. But now, they face the very real prospect of losing him — just as they prepare for major competitions like the 2025 Leagues Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.

Frustrations mount amid competitive setbacks

Inter Miami currently sits fourth in the Eastern Conference after 10 games, boasting 21 points with six wins, three draws, and a single loss. But there’s a sense of disappointment lurking beneath those numbers. The team was eliminated in the CONCACAF Champions Cup semifinals, suffering a heavy 5-1 aggregate defeat to Vancouver Whitecaps, and doubts are creeping in about the direction of the project.

Messi remains the club’s most important player, having scored four goals in MLS and five in the Champions Cup, including a stellar showing in the 4-1 victory over the NY Red Bulls. Yet his individual brilliance may not be enough to convince him to stay without more meaningful team success.

Head coach Javier Mascherano, a close friend and former teammate of Messi, has also found himself under pressure. In 18 matches, his managerial record stands at 11 wins, 3 draws, and 4 losses. After the CONCACAF exit, fans and media alike have started questioning his tactical choices.
