Kevin Durant has been at the forefront of trade talks this season, with the Golden State Warriors coming very close to making a deal for him before he made an effort to nix the move.
Durant has been linked to several teams in a potential offseason deal, including the Warriors, but it remains to be seen where he will end up if he is traded. One NBA insider speculated that Durant could be headed back to Texas, where he played his college hoops.
Could the San Antonio Spurs Acquire Kevin Durant?
Since the trade deadline, rumors have circulated that Durant could be moved this summer. The Phoenix Suns have climbed into the race for a play-in spot, but they still have work to do to become a true contender.
If Phoenix trades Durant, there will be plenty of suitors. Despite turning 37 next season and entering his 18th season (19th year in the league, as he missed a season due to injury), he remains one of the NBA’s top scorers. His contract, however, is significant; Durant is set to make $54.7 million next season, meaning any deal would require a major salary exchange.
His name has surfaced in connection with teams like the Houston Rockets and Oklahoma City Thunder, but another team could emerge in the mix: the San Antonio Spurs.
NBA insider Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints reported that the Spurs could target Durant to form a Big Three with De’Aaron Fox and Victor Wembanyama.
“There have been whispers among league personnel about the possibility of the Spurs pursuing Durant and creating the best offensive trio in the league next to Fox and Wembanyama,” Siegel reported.

While Durant, Fox, and Wembanyama together would be deadly for defenses, there is always a chance that Durant could remain with the Suns. Durant is averaging 26.8 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.3 assists while shooting 52.7% from the field this season.
Will Durant Stay With the Suns or Be Traded?
In a small sample size, the duo of Devin Booker and Durant has looked stronger than the trio of Durant, Booker, and Bradley Beal. Beal exercised his no-trade clause to prevent a deal at the deadline, leaving the Suns limited in their roster flexibility.
A trade to the Spurs could help Phoenix reset its depth and add younger talent, but it depends on what San Antonio would be willing to offer.
Regardless, Durant could be on the move again this summer. Will the Spurs pull the trigger on a deal, or will the Suns’ asking price be too steep?
