DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — NASCAR officials penalized driver Sammy Smith Tuesday afternoon for his role in the much-publicized final-lap accident during Saturday’s Xfinity Series race at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway.
Smith was docked 50 points and fined $25,000, but was not suspended.
Smith ran his JR Motorsports Chevrolet into the back bumper of Gray’s Toyota entering turn three on the final lap of the Marine Corps. 250. The contact caused Gray to spin, creating a multi-car accident as Austin Hill scooted past for the victory.
Gray and fellow driver Jeb Burton were each fined $5,000 for behavioral penalties that occurred inside the infield care center.
The penalty dropped Smith from sixth to 13th in the Xfinity Series standings.
