Lorenzo Musetti is enjoying his time as one of two Italian men inside the Top-10 of the ATP’s rankings (it’s the first time that has ever happened), and on Friday in Rome he won his first match as a Top-10 player.
Musetti, who defeated Finland’s Otto Virtanen 6-3, 6-2 in 86 minutes, will face American Brandon Nakashima in the third round. The Italian is now 18-4 since the beginning of his run to the Olympic bronze medal in Paris last July.
A finalist in Monte-Carlo and a semifinalist at Madrid, Musetti is hoping to reach beyond his career-best performance at the Foro Italico – a round of 16 appearance in 2023.
Musetti is one of two Italian men that reached the third round today. Wild card Francesco Passaro upset Grigor Dimitrov 7-5 6-3 to reach the third round for the second consecutive year.
Four more Italian men, including top-seeded Jannik Sinner and Matteo Berrettini, will be in second-round action on Saturday at Rome.
