Monday Morning Hangover: What’s next for Gilbert Burns after losing fourth straight at UFC Vegas 106?

Matches to make for UFC 317 winners: Who should Ilia Topuria fight next?

UFC Vegas 106 went down last Saturday night (May 17, 2025) inside UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada, leaving several fighters feeling the post-fight blues. Among them was Thiago Moises, who was knocked out by Jared Gordon (see it again here).

And Luana Pinheiro, who suffered her fourth straight defeat after losing a unanimous decision to Tecia Pennington. But which fighter is suffering from the worst post-fight hangover, now a few days removed from the show?

Gilbert Burns.

Coming into the event, Burns was looking to get back on track after losing his previous three fights, with is last win coming against Jorge Masvidal at UFC 287 two years ago. But credit to “Durinho,” he never shied away from taking the tough fights because his losses came against former champion, Belal Muhammad, current champion, Jack Della Maddalena and No. 1 contender, Sean Brady. Still, a win was of the utmost importance for the Brazilian bomber.

Unfortunately for the former UFC Welterweight title contender, things got much worse before they had a chance to get batter.

From the jump, Michael Morales utilized his size and speed advantage to pick Burns apart. Halfway through the opening round, the young prospect turned it up another level and put on the finishing touches on the long-time veteran to secure a first round technical knockout (watch highlights).

And just like that, Burns suffered his fourth straight defeat.

“Thankful for this journey! I’m still super blessed! Of course, it wasn’t the outcome I was looking forward to, especially for this one, I worked extremely hard, who saw, saw, but it’s the fight game and it’s life,” Burns wrote on social media.

“Congrats to Michael, wishing you and your team all the success! That’s it, no sad stories! Grateful for this beautiful journey and for all the lessons! God is good all the time! All honor, praise, and glory are given to him, Jesus Christ, in a win or defeat!”

It’s a drastic fall for “Durinho,” who admitted prior to the fight that retirement wasn’t too far off. Furthermore, he was willing and able to take the label of gatekeeper, a title that seems fitting now.

At 38 years of age, it seems Burns’ plans to walk away from the fight game could come sooner, rather than later. That said, he may have at least one more fight left in him before he hangs them up for good.

Since the promotion likely won’t cut him due to his struggles, I would like to see Burns face off against the loser of the upcoming fight between Kevin Holland and Vicente Luque, who are set to throw down at UFC 316 next month.

If that doesn’t work, then perhaps setting him up against former interim champion, Colby Covington, would be another option. “Chaos” hasn’t looked like himself as of late, either, losing two in a row and three of his last four.
