Monday Digest: Mboko Stays Perfect in 2025

Is Victoria Mboko ever going to lose in 2025? 

We are entering the ninth week of the tennis season and the 18-year-old Canadian still has yet to lose not just a match, but a set in singles so far this year. She added another title last week and made Canadian history, with more on the line in the coming days. 

Here’s what you need to know. 

Under the Radar: Mboko Makes History with More on the Horizon 

Victoria Mboko continues to tear through the ITF Women’s World Tour in 2025. Last week, she improved to 20-0 in main draw matches, 22-0 including qualifying, and picked up her fourth title of the season at the W35 event in Manchester, United Kingdom. 

Just like her previous three titles this year, she won it without dropping a set. In her 22 matches (including qualifying) in 2025, she has not lost a single set and has only needed to win more than six games six times in those 41 sets (she had one opponent retire).  

Mboko’s semifinal victory over Jia-Jing Lu was her 19th main-draw win in a row which set the Canadian record for most consecutive match wins by a Canadian woman (since the ITF records began in 1994), breaking Rebecca Marino’s record of 18. She then defeated Manon Leonard 7-6(0), 6-2 in the final to claim the title, her seventh professional singles title overall, and move into second on the combined Canadian winning streak list, ahead of Frank Dancevic.

Heading into an ITF event in Macon, France, this week, Mboko sits three wins behind Vasek Pospisil for the most consecutive singles wins by a Canadian at 23. She needs to reach the final to break the record. 

Ariana Arseneault was also a winner in Manchester last week, claiming the doubles title with American Anna Rogers. The top-seeded pair had to win two match tiebreaks 10-8, including in the final against the Polish pair of Weronika Falkowska and Martyna Kubka, on their way to the title, Arseneault’s first of the year and seventh overall. 

Justin Boulais made it a hat trick for the Canadians on the ITF circuit last week, picking up the doubles title in Vila Real de Santo Antonio, Portugal at an M25 event. He partnered with American William Woodall to take the crown, Boulais’ third doubles title as a professional. They won a thrilling three-set final against Patrick Kaukovalta and Quinn Vandecasteele 10-7 in the match tiebreak. 

The biggest group of Canadians competing this coming week on the ITF Tour is at a W35 event in Arcadia, California. 

In Case You Missed It: Another Strong Performance from Auger-Aliassime 

Félix Auger-Aliassime has also had a great start to 2025 and he added another deep run last week, reaching the semifinals of the ATP 500 event in Doha. He did have a bit of luck break his way as, after a three-set win in round one, he only had to play one set in his next two matches. Hamad Medjedovic pulled out ahead of their second-round clash and Daniil Medvedev retired with an illness a set into their quarter-final. 

Similar to his run at the Masters 1000 event in Madrid last May, the Canadian’s luck ran out against Andrey Rublev, who narrowly edged Auger-Aliassime in three sets in the semifinals. 

Leylah Annie Fernandez and Gabriela Dabrowski were the two Canadians playing in the second WTA 1000 event of the season in Dubai, but both dropped their opening matches. 

What to Watch: Canadian Collision Course in Acapulco 

Denis Shapovalov and Gabriel Diallo are both back in action on the ATP Tour this week and could find themselves on opposite sides of the net at the ATP 500 event in Acapulco.  

The pair are projected to meet in the quarter-finals, although there are some serious challenges standing in their way, particularly for Diallo. The Montrealer, who dropped just three games in two qualifying matches to get into the main draw, will face third seed Tommy Paul in the first round. If he avenges his loss at the US Open last fall, Diallo would play either Marcos Giron or Adam Walton in the second round.

Shapovalov, seeded ninth, has a slightly easier path. He opens against qualifier Nishesh Basavareddy and would play either Alex Michelsen or Yunchaokete Bu in round two. 

They are in the bottom half of the draw with second seed Casper Ruud. Alexander Zverev is the top seed. 

Over in the Middle East, Félix Auger-Aliassime has a tricky draw at the ATP 500 event in Dubai. He opens against the crafty Alexander Bublik and would face either eighth seed Arthur Fils or Nuno Borges in the second round, with second seed Alex de Minaur potentially looming in the quarter-finals.  

Andrey Rublev is once again his projected semifinal opponent. Daniil Medvedev is the top seed. 

There are no Canadian women competing in WTA Tour main draws this week. Both Rebecca Marino and Marina Stakusic were beaten in qualifying at the WTA 250 event in Austin, Texas.
