The mixed 4x100m relay will make its Olympic debut at the LA 2028 Games, providing countries an extra opportunity for a gold medal in athletics.
The IOC, who approved the entire sports programme for the next Olympics today (April 9), has followed World Athletics in introducing the event to major competitions.
World Athletics has already stated that the mixed 4x100m will be incorporated into both the 2025 World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou and next year’s inaugural Ultimate Championships in Budapest.

The global governing body also announced last month that the format for the new event will be woman, woman, man, man but that will up for review after the upcoming World Athletics Relays.
Records for the mixed 4x100m will be recognised as of January 1, 2026.
At last year’s Olympics in Paris, the USA took gold in the women’s 4x100m with Great Britain and Germany securing silver and bronze respectively.
In the men’s race, Canada claimed the Olympic title with South Africa and Great Britain making up the podium.
