Miranda Maverick suffered a serious injury in her loss to former UFC champion Rose Namajunas.
Maverick faced her past training partner in the co-main event of UFC Atlanta on Saturday and lost a competitive unanimous decision, which snapped her four-fight win streak. In the third round, Namajunas clipped Maverick with a left hook that looked like it dropped her to the canvas, but a leg injury also seemed to be a factor after further review.
Following the loss, Maverick released her first statement, revealing she suffered a torn ACL in the fight, even before the sequence in the third round.
“Not the result I wanted but I fought with what I had,” Maverick wrote on Instagram. “My ACL was torn in the second round (I’ll have to rewatch to know exactly when but I think it was during a takedown exchange). I never got dropped, but I was unstable on my legs so as soon as I got hit in the third round, my leg buckled. I’m blessed I was able to make it to the end of the fight and I’m honored that I got to share the cage with the legend [Rose Namajunas].
“I’ll take this layoff in stride and you will see me again! But for now time to recover and figure some things out.”
The 27-year-old dropped to 8-4 in her UFC run, with all of her promotional losses coming to fighters currently ranked in the top 10 of the UFC’s flyweight division. In her prior outing, Maverick defeated Jamey-Lyn Horth at UFC Tampa via unanimous decision to make it four wins in a row.
Namajunas is back above .500 with a 3-2 record overall since the two-time strawweight champion made the move to flyweight. The victory put Namajunas back in the win column after dropping a close decision to Erin Blanchfield at UFC Edmonton this past November.
